Question of Origins, Part One with Dr. Ron Carlson

This standalone message is given by Dr. Ron Carlson of Christian Ministries International, who has lectured on origins in universities around the world. His subject is what he calls the most important worldview question: did life arise by evolution, or is it the creation of God? Carlson argues that, weighed against the scientific evidence, creation is the more reasonable conclusion and that evolution rests on faith. Everybody Has Faith

Carlson opens with a story of an eleven-hour flight beside an Australian biology professor who told him “the problem with you Christians is you just have faith.” He answers that everyone lives by faith: faith that the airplane will fly, that the pilot is competent, that the seat will hold. The real question, he argues, is not whether you have faith but what you put your faith in, and whether it is a reasonable object of faith. He frames evolution and creation as two “faith propositions,” since (he argues) no one observed the origin of the universe or life and the event cannot be repeated, so the question is which faith the scientific evidence better supports. This “origins is a matter of faith, not observational science” framing is itself disputed by mainstream scientists.


The Origin of Life

Carlson turns to how life began. He cites the Harvard Nobel laureate George Wald to argue there are only two options, spontaneous generation (life from non-living matter) or a creative act of God, and that since spontaneous generation was disproven by Louis Pasteur and others, only creation remains. He appeals to the law of biogenesis, the principle that life comes only from life, and argues it rules out life arising from non-living chemicals. (Students should know that Carlson’s use of the Wald quotation is contested, and that mainstream science distinguishes the disproof of nineteenth-century “spontaneous generation” of maggots and mice from modern research on the chemical origin of life; see the note.)


Design and Probability

Carlson argues that the complexity of living things points to a designer. He uses the illustration of a wristwatch that could never assemble itself from junk parts shaken in a box, and of 10,000 index cards dropped from an airplane never landing in an ordered message, to argue that chance cannot produce complex order. He points to the human eye, with its millions of rods and cones and its rapid signal processing, as an example of design, concluding it takes more faith to believe such things arose by chance than by a designer. Mainstream biologists respond that evolution is not single-step random assembly but cumulative natural selection, which these analogies leave out; students should weigh that response.


The Second Law of Thermodynamics

Carlson’s central scientific argument is from the second law of thermodynamics, which he describes as the principle that everything moves from order toward disorder (entropy). A new car left in the woods rusts; a cleaned room becomes messy. Since evolution claims things move upward toward greater complexity, he argues it runs backward against this basic law. He recounts an anecdote of Carl Sagan being asked about the second law and answering that “enough time” overcomes it, which Carlson rejects, arguing more time produces more disorder, not less.

This argument is not accepted by mainstream physics, which holds that the second law applies to isolated systems, while the Earth is an open system continually receiving energy from the sun, so local increases in order (including living things growing and biological complexity increasing) are fully consistent with the second law. This is one of the most important points for students to examine critically.


The Fossil Record

Carlson argues that if evolution were true, the fossil record should contain millions of transitional forms (“missing links”), but that these are not found. He cites Charles Darwin’s own acknowledgment of the scarcity of intermediates, and quotes the paleontologists Stephen Jay Gould, Niles Eldredge, and Colin Patterson to argue that transitional fossils are essentially absent and that fossils appear “fully formed.” He points to the sudden appearance of complex animals in the fossil record as evidence.

Students should be aware that this section rests on quotations that the scientists themselves said were misused. Gould and Eldredge proposed “punctuated equilibrium” as an account of the pace of evolution within evolutionary theory, not as a rejection of evolution or a claim that transitional fossils do not exist, and Gould repeatedly objected that creationists quoted him this way. Colin Patterson likewise said his words were taken out of context. Mainstream paleontology holds that many well-documented transitional fossils exist (for example, Tiktaalik between fish and amphibians, feathered dinosaurs and Archaeopteryx, and the whale and horse and human lineages). The claim that “not one transitional fossil” exists is not accurate to the current science.


“Redefining” Evolution: Micro Versus Macro

Carlson’s closing argument is that because there is no evidence for large-scale evolution, it has been “redefined” as natural selection. He distinguishes change within a kind (which he calls change “horizontally within species,” such as breeding roses or dogs, or variation in finch beaks) from one kind turning into another kind (macroevolution). He grants that the first happens constantly and that creationists accept natural selection, adaptation, and “survival of the fittest,” but argues that variation within a kind is not evidence for one kind becoming another. He points to magazine features on Galapagos finches and dog varieties, noting the finches remain finches and the dogs remain dogs.

Mainstream biology does not accept this micro/macro barrier: it holds that the same processes of mutation and selection, over long timescales, do produce new species and larger-scale change, supported by fossil, genetic, and observational evidence. Carlson’s distinction is a standard creationist argument that most biologists reject.


The Conclusion

Carlson concludes that true science, rightly read, is consistent with God’s Word, and that the conflict is not between science and the Bible but between the Bible and a “man-made theory” of evolution he believes the evidence does not support. He closes with Romans 1:20, that God’s eternal power and divine nature are clearly seen in what He has made, so that people are “without excuse,” and with the theme that the heavens declare the glory of God.
